Equalizing the Digital Divide: Computers For Schools in Burundi

Cooperation and Collaboration = Transformation

RCNY’s President Dr. Cowin personally supports Computers For Schools Burundi through the RCNY Foundation as she believes that computers and mobile devices have become almost ubiquitous in society. Yet, improving student learning can depend on where you live and access to computers. This gap in equality has generated talk of a new digital divide. “We have moved from the ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots.’ says Leslie Wilson, founder and chief executive officer of the nonprofit One-to-One Institute in Michigan.

Emmanuel Ngendakuriyo, Director, Computers For Schools Burundi from Bujumbura-Burundi heads this local non profit organization registered in republic of Burundi. The principal objective is to modernize the Burundi education system through the use of Information and Communications Technologies(ICT) in the Schools, Universities and Community. The organization achieves this by providing computers to schools and train the teachers on how to use the equipment and software,and later,the teachers facilitate the ICT curriculum for students in the classes.

Computers For Schools Burundi is working in partnership with RC Bujumbura,RC Ottawa, and RC West Ottawa for Global Grant project for equipping 5 schools in Burundi with 100 Computers(a computer lab equipped with 20 Computers each school) and training of 100 teachers from those schools. Mr. Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, Senior Advisor and Special Representative to the United Nations for the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. Chair of the Task Force on Nuclear Nonproliferation of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association, and Ambassador for Peace and Security of the Parliament of the World’s Religions. The Republic of Latvia, Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks at RCNY

On February 21, 2018, the Rotary Club of New York, Host Club #6, hosted the Permanent Representative to the United Nations of the Republic of Latvia, Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks at the United Nations International Breakfast meeting. The honorable Ambassador also spoke about the Security challenges in the Baltic region and answered many questions about the status of Latvia in the region, its economic qualities and challenges with Russia and in general. In addition, the Ambassador spoke about Latvia’s promotion of multicultural educational integration to avoid minority ghettos. Latvia’s government sees language as a central element of identity and 60% of their classroom teaching is bilingual with 8 languages taught in their school system. RCNY’s newest member Laura Cristanelli, who also arranged for the Ambassador to speak at the RCNY meeting, was inducted at the beginning of the meeting.

Rotary Club of New York Presidency Installation Address by Dr. Jasmin Bey Cowin

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, honored guests, beloved family and my Rotarian Fellows,

It is indeed a great honor and responsibility to stand before you as the second woman in our Clubs 108-year history to lead our Club. The transition year gave the space to reflect and reach out to former and future leadership and members. There were wide-ranging conversations and guidance by our first woman President, Helen Reisler.

I read much about leadership and in the article, The Secrets of Great Teamwork by Martine Haas and Mark Mortensen a particular quote resonated deeply, “.. what teams need to thrive are certain “enabling conditions.” I have come to the conclusion that my focus must be on enabling you the members, the heart, and soul of our Rotary Club of New York. I have an advantage according to the authors – I have the “fourth critical condition: a shared mindset.” Everybody from the Board to YOU, the members deeply believes in the core values of the Rotary Club.

Having the goal for our Club to take a lead on “Rotary means Business”, “Service above Self “ and to be the creator, incubator, and starter of a Rotary Walk around the World will be the common bond, goal, and outlet for our combined philanthropic energy waiting to be unleashed, creating global visibility to our foundational core values:

Service
Fellowship
Diversity
Integrity
Leadership

We achieve this through asking ourselves:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

My idea #Rotary (name of Club) Walk hopefully embodies the core principle that the “the foundation of every great team is a direction that energizes, orients, and engages its members. Teams cannot be inspired if they don’t know what they’re working toward and don’t have explicit goals.”

I further believe you elected me to be the voice of your collective desire to change the lives of our fellow citizens in Manhattan and around the world to the better.

In other words: I accept the position as the President Servant-Leader to the members of the Rotary Club of New York.

INTERNSHIP: Executive Asst. to RCNY President Rustam Alikulov, Kazakhstan

Welcome to Rustam Alikulov, Kazakhstan, who has accepted the unpaid RCNY Internship as Executive Assistant to the President. The internship runs from September 9th through October 7th, 2017.

Rustam will be an excellent resource to us in leading the newly chartered Interact Club Tarrytown, working with it’s founder and President Kai Cowin, in creating with her a social media campaign for RCNY, and to assist in the implementation of RCNY business and service projects.

Currently, Rustam serves as the Head of Events & Projects Department, Tourist Information Center Visit Almaty – 2017 (Tourism and Foreign Affairs Department of Almaty City, Kazakhstan). He was also the leader of the Kazakhstani Youth Organization, New York City where he organized events for students and Kazakhstani youth who live in the Eastern and Northern part of the USA (currently numbering 4,000 members.) and during which he assisted in the maintenance of a Facebook page and a social media campaign/outreach. In addition, from Sep 2013 to Dec 2014 he worked as Assistant to the Consul General at the Consulate of the Republic of Kazakhstan, New York City.
